The Mitsubishi Research Institute, Inc. is now executing the tasks of the Project Management Office for the “Project of Decommissioning and Contaminated Water Management” in the FY2014 Supplementary Budget on behalf of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy.
In this release, we are pleased to announce that we are preparing for solicitation of subsidized entities to implement “Project of Decommissioning and Contaminated Water Management” in the FY2014 Supplementary Budget. Detailed information is going to be released on our website in the near future.

Updated on June 19
1. Purpose of Project

In this project, the projects which will support development of technologies contributing to decommissioning and contaminated water management of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station of Tokyo Electric Power Company will be conducted, so that the decommissioning and contaminated water management of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station can be implemented smoothly; and that the level of science and technology in Japan can be enhanced.

2. Contents of Project

This project is to be implemented based upon “Mid-and-Long-Term Roadmap towards the Decommissioning of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Units 1-4”.

In order to retrieve fuel debris and internal structures in the process of decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, the following projects were implemented last year:

(1) Development of technology for Retrieval of Fuel Debris and Internal Structures mainly focusing on the technology deploying submerging approach

(2) Conceptual Study of Innovative Approach for Fuel Debris Retrieval and Feasibility Study including the approach deployed in the air; and

(3) Consideration of feasibility of the elemental technologies supporting the above-mentioned item (2) (cutting and dust collection technology, as well as visual imaging technology and measurement technology)

In adoption and implementation of the retrieval approach and technology of fuel debris and internal structures in the future, the following approaches must be taken into consideration: i.e. submerging approach and approach done in the air, as well as retrieval approaches from the top and from the side.
Based upon previous considerations, this solicitation, implemented in the framework of “Subsidy to Project of Decommissioning and Contaminated Water Management” in the FY2014 Supplementary Budget, comprises the following two projects:

I. Project of Development of Fundamental Technologies for Retrieval of Fuel Debris and Internal Structures

II. Project of Upgrading Approach for Retrieval of Fuel Debris and Internal Structures

Further information: In this solicitation, we would accept the “partial proposal” to implement some items out of the above-mentioned items.
