Advance notice of the Request for Information related to the “Project of Decommissioning, Contaminated Water and Treated Water Management”

Management Office for the Project of Decommissioning,
Contaminated Water and Treated Water Management

From Management Office for the Project of Decommissioning, Contaminated Water and Treated Water Management (hereinafter referred to as “PMO”), we will conduct the Request for Information (hereinafter referred to as “RFI”) related to the research and development contents to be conducted under the Project of Decommissioning, Contaminated Water and Treated Water Management (hereinafter referred to as “the Project”). Please find the following details.

(1) Regarding the Project

The Project aims to support development of technologies contributing to decommissioning, contaminated water and treated water management of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (hereinafter referred to as “Fukushima Daiichi NPS”) of the Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. (hereinafter referred to as “TEPCO”), so that the decommissioning, contaminated water and treated water management of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS can be implemented smoothly, and that may lead to the improvement of Japan’s science and technology standards. Please note that the results obtained from the Project will be utilized for the engineering activities conducted by TEPCO.

(2) Implementation of RFI

To support the formulation of future R&D priorities and development plans under this program, the following two RFIs will be conducted.

  • RFI for Addressing On-Site Decommissioning Challenges
  • The Management Office for the Project of Decommissioning, Contaminated Water and Treated Water Management is conducting R&D activities in line with the list of research themes shown in Figure 1, with the aim of addressing on-site challenges at the Fukushima Daiichi NPS.

Based on each project theme in this R&D portfolio, we will issue an RFI seeking information on R&D topics, implementation approaches, and technologies that contribute to addressing on-site decommissioning challenges.

    Expected application period: May 8 (Fri), 2026 – June 5 (Fri), 2026

  • RFI for Promoting the Creation of Frontier Decommissioning Technologies (RFI for Frontier Program (Tentative title))
  • Fukushima Daiichi NPS is a decommissioning site of high technical difficulty, unprecedented on a global scale, and will require addressing unforeseen technical issues that may arise in the future. Therefore, in addition to conventional challenge- driven and theme-driven research and development, it is essential to adopt an approach that flexibly incorporates advanced and existing technologies from other fields and sectors to identify new applications for decommissioning sites. This RFI is intended to broadly solicit insights and proposals regarding common technologies applicable to decommissioning operations at the Fukushima Daiichi NPS, without being constrained by specific objectives or themes. The R&D needs expected by the PMO are shown in Figure 2.

Start of solicitation: June 1 (Mon), 2026 – (The solicitation period is subject to change.)
